What to do before going to the pharmacy

  • Confirm the prescription is ready: Have the client verify the prescription is ready or call the pharmacy yourself to check.
  • Gather the necessary information: You will need the client’s full name, date of birth, and address.
  • Prepare your ID: Have your own government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, to present to the pharmacist.
  • Call ahead (recommended): It’s best to call the pharmacy to check their specific policy. Some may require you to provide the client’s name in advance, especially for controlled substances. 

What to do at the pharmacy

  • Inform the pharmacist: When you arrive, tell the pharmacist you are there to pick up a prescription for someone else.
  • Answer the verification questions: Be prepared to answer questions about the client’s personal information to verify your identity and their identity.
  • Provide your ID: Present your photo ID as requested.
  • Sign and receive the medication: You may need to sign to confirm pickup. The pharmacist may also call the client to verify they are comfortable with you picking up the prescription.
